ABOUT US

About Us

Milton Keynes Deaf Community (MKDC) is a growing and vibrant group created to bring Deaf people together, reduce isolation, and promote wellbeing through meaningful social connections and inclusive activities.

Originally part of the long-standing Milton Keynes Deaf Club, we have faced challenges over the years due to reduced council funding and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many traditional Deaf clubs across the country have since closed or moved online, making face-to-face interaction increasingly rare. This has left a gap in local support and connection, contributing to loneliness and poor mental health issues that Deaf people are statistically more likely to face compared to the hearing community.

With a passion for helping others and a strong belief in the power of community, we launched a Saturday Morning Coffee Club at John Lewis,  Milton Keynes on the third Saturday of each month. It was an immediate success, with many members expressing how much they valued the chance to reconnect, make new friends, and feel part of something again.

In response to growing enthusiasm, we have expanded our activities to include social outings like bowling, canal boat trips, group meals, wreath-making workshops, pottery painting sessions and even a day out at London Zoo. These events not only bring joy and connection but also encourage people to try new things in a supportive and welcoming environment.

Our goal is simple: to create a safe, inclusive space where Deaf people can come together, have fun, and feel a true sense of belonging.  While we don’t yet have a permanent base, we are incredibly grateful to John Lewis, Milton Keynes  for providing a free monthly meeting space that helps keep our community connected.

We’re proud to be reigniting Deaf culture and face-to-face connection in Milton Keynes—one coffee, one activity, and one smile at a time.
